Home on the Road: Embracing RV or Tiny Home Life as a Travel Healthcare Professional

Written by Madison Gregg | Apr 16, 2025 6:15:00 PM

For travel therapists and education professionals, home isn’t always defined by four fixed walls—it’s wherever purpose meets freedom. As more travelers lean into flexible lifestyles that support both personal values and career goals, RV and tiny home living are becoming increasingly popular choices. Imagine waking up in the mountains one month, by the beach the next—all while making a difference in the lives of patients or students across the country. Whether you’re drawn to the simplicity of a tiny space or the open-road possibilities of an RV, this lifestyle offers more than just mobility—it offers clarity, control, and a deeper connection to your journey.

Why RV or Tiny Home Life?

1. Flexibility That Moves with You

Travel healthcare jobs already sends you to new places—why not bring your home along for the ride? Our travelers love the ultimate freedom living in an RV or tiny home give them to plant roots wherever your assignment takes you. No more scrambling for housing or signing short-term leases. You carry your cozy space, your familiar routines, and your creature comforts with you.

2. Saving Money, Living Intentionally

RV and tiny home living often mean significantly lower monthly expenses. From skipping rent deposits to avoiding utilities and internet setup fees, many healthcare travelers find they can stretch their stipend further. Plus, the minimalist lifestyle naturally leads to more intentional spending (AKA fewer impulse purchases) and less distractions.

3. A Closer Connection to Nature and Community

Imagine finishing a rewarding day of therapy or teaching and unwinding under the stars. RV parks and tiny home communities often put you right next to hiking trails, lakes, and scenic views. Many also offer a sense of community, with like-minded travelers and locals eager to share stories, tips, or a campfire meal.

Getting Started: What to Know Before You Hit the Road

1. Choose the Right Setup

For RV life, consider your needs—do you want a motorhome or a towable trailer? For tiny homes, look into buying new or used, zoning laws, and hookups. Either way, balance comfort with practicality: think functional kitchen space, climate control, reliable Wi-Fi, and a spot for telehealth sessions or lesson prep if needed.

2. Plan for Hookups and Parking

Do your travel healthcare assignments take you to rural areas or urban centers? Plan your parking or RV hookups in advance, especially near your job site. Some campgrounds or RV parks may have different rules or requirements than ones you've stayed at before, so be sure to check ahead for anything that might cause issues upon arrival. Most Bureau of Land management campgrounds are free as well! Experienced BoonDockers Jesse and Rachel Lyons share their tips for successful RV camping on BLM land here

3. License, Insurance & Maintenance

Make sure you're covered on the road. That includes vehicle registration, insurance (both for your rig and contents), and knowing how to maintain your mobile home. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping you safe and stress-free between assignments.

4. Stay Connected

A strong internet connection is essential for charting, documentation, virtual IEP meetings, or teletherapy. Consider investing in a mobile hotspot or cell booster for reliable service in more remote locations.
