Navigating Licensing Requirements Across States As a Travel Therapist

As a travel therapist, you’ve chosen to embrace the diversity of landscapes, cultures, and patient populations, bringing your healing touch wherever it’s needed most. But, as with any great adventure, the journey comes with its challenges—one of the biggest being navigating licensing requirements across various states. Physical, occupational, and speech therapists must have a state license for each state you plan to work in. However, utilizing Compact Licensure or your healthcare recruiter can help make that licensure process a breeze.

Utilize The Compact License When Possible

The Physical Therapy Licensure Compact (PTLC) opens doors to practicing across state lines without needing a separate license for each state. This initiative is an idealist’s dream, fostering collaboration, mobility, and access to care on a national scale. If you’re eligible, this compact can save time and energy, allowing you to focus on your mission rather than on paperwork. Currently, there are 30 states plus Washington D.C. that are actively issuing and accepting compact licenses, 8 states have enacted legislation but are not yet issuing or accepting licenses, and 3 states have legislation introduced. In order to be eligible for the PTLC, your home state must be participating in the legislation. You can find the latest updates on the Physical Therapy Compact License info here. Occupation therapists and speech therapists don't have the option for a compact license just yet, but both the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact and the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact expect to start issuing privileges in 2025.

Plan Ahead With Licensing

Each state is unique in its approach to healthcare regulations, so planning ahead with your licensing can help make your process as smooth as possible. Pick a state that you're looking to work in and get licensed in advance before looking for jobs, look for jobs in quick license states and get your license after you secure your job, or pick multiple states for licensure to open up your options before looking for jobs. By staying organized and researching state regulations in advance, you can focus on what matters most—providing exceptional care while exploring new places. A little foresight in licensing can turn potential roadblocks into stepping stones on your professional journey.

Lean On Your Healthcare Recruiter

Your recruiter is an invaluable resource when it comes to navigating licensing as a travel therapist. They’re not just there to match you with jobs—they can guide you through each state’s specific licensing process, provide updates on any changes in requirements, and even help you stay on track with deadlines. Leveraging their expertise can save you time and prevent unnecessary stress, allowing you to focus on your assignments. By partnering with your recruiter, you turn licensing from a hurdle into a smooth, manageable step toward your next adventure. Your travel agency may also provide reimbursements for the cost of your license, like Jackson Therapy Partners does. You can learn more about our licensure reimbursement options here
